Disclaimer: This thread is directed at those with no prior knowledge of RWBY, and as such will have explanations for everything the show contains. As such, this thread will be fairly long. A TL;DR version shall follow.
What is RWBY?
Put simply, RWBY is an animated series by the company Roosterteeth set in the world of Remnant. The show (whose name is pronounced "Ruby") showcases the endeavors of Team RWBY, comprised of team leader Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long, throughout their studies at Beacon Academy.
Section 1: Beacon/Grimm/Dust
Nestled within the Kingdom of Vale, Beacon Academy is the most prestigious Huntsman Academy in the entirety of Remnant. At Beacon, eager students train to defend their world from the creatures known as Grimm via the use of weaponry, Semblances, and Dust. It is here and the surrounding City of Vale in which the story takes place.
Moving onto the subject of Grimm. Grimm are monstrous creatures that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and features. Grimm are attracted by negative emotions such as fear or anger in large amounts, and are the only creatures on the world of Remnant that are shown to not have souls. When a Grimm dies, its body evaporates into the air almost as if it never existed in the first place. Stronger Grimm take more people to combat, and there are constantly reports of Grimm attacking towns and settlements throughout Remnant.
Dust. A source of unimaginable power, Dust comes in innumerable types. Dust, while volatile in its powdery state, is a very potent weapon, and can be sewn into clothes, packed into bullet, and infused into weaponry such as daggers, maces and swords. As mentioned before, Dust has been mentioned to have many, many different types, and is commonly found underground.
Section 2: Semblances/Huntsman
Semblances are, in base terms, special abilities. A person's super power, if you will. They manifest from the Aura, or Soul, of a person, and it is said that each semblance is as unique as any person on the planet. Semblances have been shown to not be inherently known, but rather must be discovered through the course of a person's life. As one would infer, Semblances drain an amount of Aura when used.
Hunters and Huntresses. Known as Huntsman, for a more general term, they protect the towns and settlements of Remnant from whatever cruel fate may otherwise befall them should they be left to the Grimm. During their tutelage at a Huntsman Academy, they are paired into teams of four for the course of their years at said Academy. However, when the graduate they may choose to remain in a team or to go solo. The work of a Huntsman is extremely dangerous, however, and there have no doubt been brave men and women killed in this line of duty. However, their stories live on through tales told by thankful townspeople, and the undoubted fame that comes with being a Huntsman is often consequential to the heroic image they hold.
